Remembering Remy: The Pizza Throw Game

BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — Late Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy had 33 years of calls at Fenway, and one of them stands out as one of the most bizarre in-game situations ever put on tape.

It involves a thrown slice of pizza. The two broadcasters in the booth at the game, against the Angels at Fenway in April 2007, were Remy and Don Orsillo. A pop-up drifted into foul territory along the third baseline around the end of the 7th inning, when a confrontation between two fans caught the attention of the broadcasters. One of the Sox fans right near baseline reached his hand up and bats the ball down, spilling beer all over himself and another fan.

Then, the magic moment. A large slice of pizza flies into the frame from off-screen, hitting the fan next to the one that batted down the fly ball square in the shoulder.

"Here comes the pizza!" cried a gleeful Remy during a replay as another view showed a man in a patriots jacket hurling the slice full-on at the man.

"Of course, he's been asked to leave the ballgame for ruining a good slice of pizza," Remy quipped.

The Sox would eventually beat the Angels 7-2, but all anyone remembers is the the triangular, flying interloper that caught Remy's attention.

WBZ's Brian Antonelli (@GuPogs) did a breakdown of the game audio in Remy's honor:
