CHATHAM, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) — State police said they have recovered the plane that vanished off of Cape Cod on Sunday night.

Mass. State Police dive teams said they recovered the fuselage of the missing Piper 28 off of Chatham on Thursday. That plane was piloted by 67-year-old Roger Mills. Mills was a Woburn resident, according to the Cape Cod Times. The paper also reports that the wings of the plane were off of its body when it was found.

Trooper Brian Doherty told WBZ's Tim Dunn that the plane was found "several miles" offshore, but didn't specify an exact location. He also said there was no sign of any of Mills' belongings.

Mills was on his way to Chatham Memorial Airport from Reading, Pennsylvania. The plane was first reported missing at around 10:00 PM on Sunday night.

State Police said the pilot wasn't recovered, and that no further dives are planned at this point. It took nine separate dives to find the plane.

The Coast Guard scoured the area earlier in the week for more than two straight days in an area of more than 2,000 square miles but did not recover anything. Part of the plane's landing gear was recovered on Wednesday.
