BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) — The Department of Justice says three men have been indicted in the prison murder of notorious Boston mobster James "Whitey" Bulger.
The US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of West Virginia announced the charges Thursday afternoon.
Paul J. DeCologero and Fotios Geas are accused of beating Bulger to death in a West Virginia federal prison in 2018, just hours after he was transferred to the prison from Florida. The killing touched off questions about why Bulger was put in general population at the prison and not given more protection.
Both men and another, Sean McKinnon, are charged with conspiracy to commit first degree murder. DeCologero and Geas were also charged with aiding and abetting first degree murder, and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.
The two men were in prison at the time of the indictment, but McKinnon was arrested in Florida.
Bulger left Boston fleeing a federal indictment in 1994, and was found 16 years later. He was 89 when he was killed.
