HYANNIS, Mass.— Reservations on the Steamship Authority's summer ferry from Hyannis to Nantucket opened at 8 a.m. Thursday morning.

The wait list was immediately flooded. Within 10 minutes, over 10,000 people joined the online queue to transport their cars off the mainland.

By 10:30 a.m., the line had jumped to over 15,000 people.

As of Thursday morning, just one third of the ship's available slots remained.

For anyone who is not able to book a spot, the Steamship Authority is offering parking lots in Hyannis and Falmouth.

The Nantucket Regional Transit Authority also offers year-round public transportation across the island.

Nantucket is not Massachusetts' only island travel destination. Reservations on the Martha's Vineyard ferry open on Feb. 14 after being delayed by one month because of technical issues.
