BOSTON (WBZ NewsRadio) —Boston College (BC) and Southern Methodist University (SMU) will face off at Fenway Park on Thursday morning for the 2023 Wasabi Fenway Bowl.

Players and coaches from both teams spoke to media at the Museum of Science on Wednesday morning. Despite BC qualifying for a bowl game three times since he took over four years ago, it was Head Coach Jeff Hafley’s first time giving a bowl-week press conference.

“For the first year during COVID, we had a successful year. With everyone getting sick and the uncertainty, we felt the best move for our team was just to let them go and get away. Year two, just about three quarters of our team got COVID,” said Hafley.

SMU Head Coach Rhett Lashlee said the Mustangs are taking it all in.

“It’s been a great week, Boston’s a great city to be here with our team on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. All our families are having a great time. Getting to play at a historic venue like Fenway Park is really cool too, so we’re just happy to be here and looking forward to a great game tomorrow,” said Lashlee.

SMU running back Tyler Lavine was also enjoying the festivities.

“This is my first time in Boston. I just really like that this is where America started. It’s really cool to see all the history here and just to be able to walk where a lot of great people walked,” said Lavine.

Kick off is set for 11:00 A.M. on Thursday at Fenway Park.
