WEYMOUTH, Mass. (WBZ NewsRadio) – The town of Weymouth is putting the wheels in motion on their next food insecurity venture.

With the help of the town and government funds, the Weymouth Food Pantry is launching the state’s first ever food pantry bus. The pantry expects the full-service bus to be ready by the summer.

Weymouth Food Pantry Executive Director Pamela Denholm said the idea for the bus came about during the pandemic as members sought safe ways to keep people fed.

“It’s going to be beautiful,” she said, “and not only can we go anywhere any time, but we can also [have] different offerings on the back and switch its purpose.”

By the time the bus is finished, it will look completely like a grocery complete with fresh produce, a bakery, dry food sections and more. Denholm said the bus will allow the pantry to help people any time and anywhere, even in the case of an emergency or natural disaster.

“If a food pantry in a neighboring town closes in an emergency, we could send our bus over there to help.”

The Weymouth Food Pantry provides free groceries to up to 600 Weymouth families every month and distribute about 350,000 pounds of food per year. The pantry also recently shifted to a more mobile model that includes pop-up locations in various neighborhoods.
