MIDDLETON, Mass (WBZ NewsRadio) — South America's southern region is about 5,000 miles from Boston, but one Middleton teacher made the trek last fall to explore its natural wonders.

Howe-Manning Elementary School teacher Julie Klipfel seized the chance to experience the area, known as Patagonia, courtesy of National Geographic's Grosvenor Teaching Fellowship.

She sent dispatches back to her students, watched over by her mother, every step of the way.

"Every day when they'd come to school, she'd show them the videos, the pictures I would send [and] the little things I would write up about what I was doing and where I was," Klipfel said.

National Geographic selects Grosvenor fellows from a pool of "exemplary" preschool through grade 12 teachers, according to the program's webpage.

Klipfel said she used the experience to teach her students "the explorer mindset" and to empower them to take action against climate change.
